REVIEW OF ((O))...

"The trilogy has been an eye opening experience for me so far as, for one, I never expected something like this to come to my attention via Connexion Bizarre, and secondly, me liking anything even vaguely country never even crossed my mind."

WOW, OVERWHELMED, BRAINWASHED reviews EP((O))...
--"Every piece seems like it has a warm, shimmering halo of synth bliss around it, which provides a very effective soft-focus counterbalance to Sampson's gritty heartbreak."
--"Sampson is anything but mopey.  In fact, he's a very charismatic, powerful, and articulate vocalist.  He's a damn good songwriter too, as each of the eight pieces here is simple, direct, and memorably hooky."
--"It is highly improbable that this band will be able to remain a secret if this EP gets heard."
--"I like this a lot."   Anthony D'Amico BRAINWASHED.com

Sandusky, Wentworth Kersey, and george&caplin say join us...

Bootgazing Vaquero Manifesto

I. All actions must produce the tendency to ponder one’s boots thoughtfully. (or Converse occasionally.)

II. No reins before any reins. Genre limitations are creative limitations.

III. Consider the space it represents, tumbleweeds of any kind should be free within it.

IV. Aspire to encompass the ideals of one or more of the following.

a. Nudie Suits

b. Space Suits

c. Adobe Coats

d. Road Trips

e. Android Federales

f. The American West

g. Cowboy Boots

V. Process before product but not before road trips. Highways are a vaquero’s driveway.

VI. Presets are stagnant urban products; manipulation is a rural survival process.

VII. Keyboards are kin to banjos, and slide guitars are genetically the same as samplers.

VIII. Less vaqueros are often more vaqueros.

IX. Mistakes are cosmic fortunes.

X. All creations would be at home on an AM radio in a pick-up truck driven by Brian Eno on the way to an open ranch or at a rodeo held by Gram Parsons.

XI. No good horse thieves stare and share.

XII. Mexican standoffs are best won by refurbishing culture, recognizing the advantages of working within a limited range of possibilities, and reconciling with repetition.

XIII. “Anything that doesn’t take years of your life and drive you to suicide hardly seems worth doing.” Cormac McCarthy

Connexion Bizarre's (Portugal)
...review of EP (O)
9 out of 10

"That release in question is "(O)" by Wentworth Kersey, a duo from Denver, Colorado in the USA, and who have a sound that is like shoegazer, post rock, americana... And utterly gorgeous it is too!

If you like music by the likes of Mogwai, Fleet Foxes and Ryan Adams, you won't go far wrong with this latest release by Wentworth Kersey. For me, I think this is gorgeous, as it touches you on so many different levels and emotions."

POPmatters REVIEW of (O)

(aka we are blushing our brains out!!! Thanks for your kind words.)

8 out of 10

"(O)
, the second of three EPs promised from Denver’s Wentworth Kersey, finds the duo upping the atmospheric ante while maintaining a strong songwriting perspective. Passing comparisons toYankee Hotel Foxtrot-era Wilco remain apt, but the tracks here feel even more ethereal and ghostly than its predecessor. The slow burn of the majestic “Teton Mountains” unfolds like a fractured wilderness expanse before melting into the plaintive strummer “Brief Symphony”. “Empty Mall/Dead Mall” into “Worms” follows a similar stylistic arc with the results never feeling forced or rushed. One day in the future, those outside the city limits of Denver will wake up to Wentworth Kersey. Armed with a fully formed aesthetic and an ear for mixing texture and melody in gorgeous proportions, the duo will be well prepared to meet the increased scrutiny. It’s only a matter of time."

YOU CRAZY DREAMERS nicely labels a Wentworth Kersey track "Song of the Day."

"The music is something that would make a great soundtrack for a Quentin Tarantino movie (when he decided to make a serious movie). While I would say the sound is basically “folk” it is soo much more - it has so many textures, auras of rolling Appalachian valleys and a modern day Mexi-Cali conquistadors - all with a slight bit of ambient flowing through it all."

" Highly recommended."

MY HEART's BEAT blog REVIEW

ART ROCKER review of EP (O)
"This knocked me for six. Some stunning, beautiful country music from Joe Kersey Sampson (A Dog Paloma) and Jeffrey Wentworth Stevens (George&Caplin). Wentworth Kersey describe their sound as a ‘sci-fi folk experiment’ which gives a good impression of what they’re up to.
The songs are simply crafted but swathed in a rich psychey soundscape. Far from swamping the country goodness, the extra layers add a whole new dimension to the songs, making them extraordinary. It’s very cleverly done - velvety and honest at the same time.
Fans of Beachwood Sparks and Mystic Chords of Memory will fall in love with this. Indeed, fans of good music everywhere should be legging it over to the Plastic Sound Supply site to buy a copy of the album"

THE DENVER POST review EP (O)

"Their sublime chemistry, however, is revelatory, sounding little like either Sampson's various folk-rock projects or Stevens' electro-dappled George&Caplin. On the second in a series of three EPs, the duo oozes a gentle sophistication and patient melodicism that sets it apart."

"If you're looking for concrete evidence of Denver's ballyhooed music scene, it's here."

DONNYBROOK WRITING ACADEMY says...

"Psych-folk experimentalists, sentimental old bastards, self-proclaimed grandpas Wentworth Kersey have embarked upon an exploratory sound project of utmost importance."

"...check out this song
(Wealth), which begins mild-manneredly enough and then launches into an epic, fantastical song of Moody Blues-esque proportions"

The Onion/Denver Decider review EP(O)

"On WK’s second self-titled EP, singer-guitarist Joe Sampson and keyboardist-programmer Jeffrey Wentworth Stevens...seamlessly meld haunting folk songs to minimal yet soaring samples and synthesizers. The result is a lush, lonesome vibe that sneaks up and bites you on the ass with its epic-ness."

::INTERVIEW with SWITCHBLADE COMB::
"Wentworth Kersey are an interesting combo from Denver, Colorado. Dusty, alt-country that swims in Eno-esque ambiance and glitch. It makes for music that’s otherworldly and antiquated sounding, but still possesses a slow and quiet beauty. More so, it that made me intrigued enough to want to discover more about its makers."

::POPmatters:: ...REVIEW...

8 out of 10

+"...an ideal soundtrack to the disintegration of the American Dream. The music on their EP O is the sound of dreams deferred and lessons learned. Acoustic guitar, electronic atmospherics, and world-weary vocals create a certain windswept beauty that meshes well with these downtrodden economic times."

+"The backing electronics from Stevens never threaten to overwhelm Sampson’s clear vocals and concise arrangements—an achievement of restraint that push these folk songs into transcendent territory. The tracks here wash in and recede before staying too long, adding to the EP’s ephemeral, mysterious nature. This eminently listenable release provides a compelling reason to anticipate two follow-up EPs promised in 2009."
